Prickly pear - Prickly pear

This work highlights the fruit of the Canarian prickly pear, the fig from the prickly pear cactus, a plant very present in the landscape of the Canary Islands. Its intense red fruits contrast with the green paddles and the clear sky, creating a very characteristic image of the island environment.

The prickly pear cactus (Opuntia ficus-indica) arrived in the Canary Islands centuries ago and easily adapted to the drier, volcanic areas, spreading across vast areas of the archipelago. Over time, it became part of the traditional rural landscape.

Beyond its fruit, this plant played a key role in the economic history of the islands. During the 19th century, it was widely cultivated for the production of cochineal, a natural red dye obtained from insects that live on the plant and which was one of the most valuable export products of the Canary Islands before the advent of synthetic dyes.

Today, the prickly pear is still part of local customs, with its harvest in the summer months. It represents a resilient plant adapted to the territory, deeply linked to the identity of the Canarian landscape.

Printed on premium 100% cotton canvas, this botanical work captures both the visual strength and cultural value of this plant, reflecting an important part of the agricultural and natural history of the Canary Islands.
